Three Tips to Get Rid of Mosquitoes in Lawns
1. Get rid of all possible breeding grounds for mosquitoes
As we have mentioned earlier, mosquitoes love stagnant water. That’s where they lay eggs. Just like when you rake leaves or mow your lawn, it’s also important to get rid of still water when cleaning up your yard.
Unraked leaves that catch irrigation water or rain, pots of water and puddles on thatch, and other debris that could hold water should be removed. Clean up your lawn, garden, and backyard to prevent mosquitoes from building a breeding ground in your home. Likewise, remove all trash and other things that could collect water, such as cups and glasses, small furniture, and drinking bowls for pets.
2. Turn on your fan when outdoors
A fan’s stream can help prevent mosquitoes from landing on your skin. As we have talked about earlier, keep the mosquitoes away by turning on your fan. There’s no need to get a special, industrial fan, as regular fans could do the job. If you have guests over or your lawn area is large, it’s best to get an oscillating fan compared to a tower fan.
3. Treat water sources
Especially if you have a fountain or other water features in your garden, treat the water with larvicide to get rid of mosquito eggs.
What if you have pets that need water?
Fish ponds may not need special treatment, as most pet fish eat mosquito larvae. The types of fish included are goldfish, koi, and mosquitofish. If you have birdbaths, replace them with fresh water every other day to make sure that mosquito larvae cannot breed there.
Some plants hold or need water, such as lotus, water lilies, and iris. It’s important to replace their water or flush their water out every so often to get rid of mosquito breeding grounds.
